Kashmir – A crown of thorns?

I did not liked it when Arundhati Roy said that “Kashmir needs freedom from India and India need freedom from Kashmir”, but the fact is that Kashmir has been a cause of problem for us since Independence. There are two ways of looking at the problem:

First, in medical terms amputation is a common phenomenon. It has been practiced since ages.  If a body part cannot be cured, then it has to be removed so that it does not poison other parts of the body. We say that Kashmir is an Integral part of India. It is deceased and the government of India is trying to find a cure since 1947. 61 years have been passed and yet there is no sign of finding any cure in near future. The fact is that there may be no cure at all, mainly because of unwillingness to find the cure from both the sides. Religion and caste play a more important role in Indian politics than the welfare of people, state & country.

Second, remember movie Majboor in which Amitabh Bachchan suffers from a terminal brain tumor and doctor tell him that there is very less likelihood of operation to be successful, and he may die if the tumor is removed. The same is the case with us – and I am reiterating it – Kashmir is an Integral part of India. Separating it from the country is not the part of the solution. More importantly, if it is separated, than it may set a trend for others to follow – Today Kashmir, tomorrow North East, than some other state. And we will again find us in same situation as pre-Independence.

So what is the solution? Remove our neighbor from the map?

Like your argument, I will personally go with Second Point. We shouldn’t just ignore the problems, solve them. I love Pak minus the all terrorism agenda and think its high time we work with them hand in hand and Do not let political powers mislead us, time and again. well at least wish full thinking!!

Chirax, thanks for the comment… I have been a high believer that we as individuals can make a difference. It may take time, but we need to do something… And personally I dont feel working with Pak will do any good.

Kashmir is an Integral part of India

On what grounds do you say that? Does any Indian know how many Kashmiris have died in the last 10 years, leave alone prior to that. Do we even know different areas of Kashmir. Does Kashmir’s problem concern the people of India like blasts in Ahemadabad and Bangalore. Absolutely not.

The reason we have found no solution to Kashmir is because initially we did not need a solution and today there is no solution possible ‘within the framework of Indian sovereignty and integrity’. Either let Kashmiris die or start thinking of a solution where chest thumping ‘kashmir Hamara Hai!’ has no place.

    Bookcrazy,
I don’t debate on if you are write or wrong. Everyone can argue stud same way about their state. You are again forgeting the fact that Kashmiris are not just Muslims but the pandits as well. Every Kashmiri, irrespective of the religion has suffered a lot. But the main reason is why are they dying? Who is killing them? Terrorists?

Your argument is not justified to find how many people know part of Kashmir? You tell me how may part do u know of any other state? Sine last 20 years we are fighting the battle against terrorism. I am sure you must be having an idea of how much we have spend and how may have soilders have died.

Their is an old Hindi saying “taali so hath we nahi bajti” (you need two hands to clap).

Nits, Its really a very sorry state we are in. We wouldn’t like to let Kashmir go, for our as well as Kashmir’s state. And I really don’t appreciate Arundhati Roy’s attitude and demeanor . She presents a very negative picture of her own country. I remember a few of her international seminars where she criticizes Indian Government’s policies. Everyone has a right to have an opinion. But one should also follow some courtesy towards one’s own country. Anyways, coming back to your post, I believe that a few media-savvy ‘intellectuals’ can’t and shouldn’t decide whats good for our country. We have different states, with different sets of problems. Every time there is a crisis in a particular state, it can’t be cut off from our country. If a family member is troubled, we reach out and help , and not discard him.
