Are we good enough to be an Indian?

I believe strongly that I am the ambassadors of my country, and I guess that’s true for everyone. It is a privilege for each one of us to born in this beautiful and great country and live in exciting times.

India had a beautiful past. We were the inventors of zero. We were the keepers of all the knowledge on the earth. There was a time when India was known as Golden Bird. We had a glorious past. What about our present and future?

Present is not that bad, in fact it can be made better.  There is so much new happening around; widening of roads, new flyovers, and new models of cars launched every six months, big shopping mall sprouting at every other corner in the city, all restaurants are always full, no matter what day of the week. These are all signs of healthy and booming economy. There is so much of feel good factor everywhere.

But is that the only truth? Are we civilized enough to be a part of a developed country? How often have you stopped by on the road while driving, allowing a pedestrian to cross the road? How often you stopped on a non monitored traffic signal when there is lesser traffic? Do you not spilt or throw your empty snacks wrappers on the road? How often do you drive without honking? When was the last time that you payed the fine, instead of bribing the policewala? When was the last time you applied the rule of first in first out (FIFO), I mean following the queue?

Everyone cribs about not having enough facilities provided by the government. We always look up to others to make over surroundings better, and I mean I am no different.  But why can’t we be civilized? Is it so hard to have civic sense? Why can’t you follow lane driving? Is it so difficult to follow traffic rules?

We live in the democracy. Does that mean that every tom-dick-n-harry has a right to call a bandh, stop traffic, or destroy public property, torch buses? I sometimes wonder how foolish and stupid anyone has to be to destroy his own property. Is it not my own money, my hard earned money that I paid as income tax that is going in the drains?

There is no single day in my life when I drive and do not curse others on the road for not following the rules. One thing that I religiously follow is traffic rules. That way I can say that I am good citizen. But is this good – good enough? God versus man, superstition versus progress, and the people versus the state – mile by mile, India is struggling to modernize itself.

Last week after returning late from office, and stuck in traffic even in that late hour, I was very angry with people on the road. Why a person who follows the rules always should suffer? It not just the roads, in you day to day life, when you go shopping, how many times did you see people following queues? In my experience I always end up getting the last attention of the person on the counter. So should I also forget all my civic manners and become a jungleey? It is sometimes really hard to resist the temptation to become an animal.

It is important for everyone in our country to have civic manners and common sense. Then only we shall be called the citizens of a developed nation. I have decided to stop cribbing about what all you did to me, and instead initiate on my own to educate you. Educate you of how important and easy it is to be civilized and make a better life for yourself and everyone around.
